A miracle to be alive
My name is John E. and this is my story. Four months ago and 3 days I checked into Valley Hope (Cushing, OK) 60 pounds underweight, shaking with the DT's, and unemployed since I was fired from my job due to alcohol abuse. I was physically very unhealthy and a miracle to be alive. Valley Hope trained me how to fight the disease and live my life in a better way. Since graduation from Valley Hope, I have moved to Denver, CO., found a new job as assistant Vice President for an investment firm covering the territories of Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas. I just met an awesome woman who teaches 2nd grade and we are really hitting it off  These are things I believe God gave me as a reward for getting and staying sober. Now that I have my health back, I can now jog 2 miles a day without having to worry about the DT's inducing a seizure or possible heart attack. Life is great when you are healthy. I can drink my morning cup of coffee and watch the sun rise in the morning or sunset at night over the mountains and appreciate all that God created for me to enjoy without having the Vodka bottle in my mouth. I look back on my days of drinking and at times am grateful I am a recovering alcoholic. Having hit the bottom in life sure makes you appreciate the world when you are on your way back up to the top. Valley Hope gave me the tools for success. But it was AA and my sponsor that taught me how to use those tools. I can not emphasize the importance of working your program. You will trip and fall, but it is your responsibility to dust yourself off and get back up again. Sobriety has been a gift from God. And for the first time in my life I have drawn a line in the sand as to what this world can throw at me. Take away the job, take away the money, take away my family, TAKE IT ALL, but the world can not have my sobriety…that belongs to me. The road to recovery is not the path of least resistance. But it is the path of highest reward. To my Brothers and Sisters still recovering, God Bless and keep up the good fight.
